Achieving spiritual perfection by oneself through yoga and meditation is impossible. One must learn spiritual practices under the guidance of a genuine spiritual master. Spiritual Guru teaches us Yoga and Meditation to attain real peace of mind, true self-knowledge, eternal happiness, liberation from karmas and develop true love for God.  This festival is celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains throughout India. Guru Purnima 2017 – Significance

Guru is the combination of two Sanskrit words “Gu” and “Ru”. ‘Gu’ is meant to be darkness and ‘Ru’ is known as remover of that darkness. So a Guru with his spiritual experience opens our eyes blinded by ignorance and darkness and guides us to reach our goals. Guru Purnima is celebrated to remember the teachings imparted from the Spiritual Guru’s and to show our respect and gratitude to these Guru’s formally on this day. Guru Purnima is also called as Vyasa Purnima as it is also the birthday of late Sage Veda Vyasa. Guru Purnima 2017 traditionally falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Ashada month. Listed below are few Significance of Guru Purnima 2017

  • Guru Purnima is the auspicious day for people to show their gratitude towards the teachings of Spiritual Guru, who guides the disciple in their spiritual path and help them completely transform.
  • Guru Purnima, also called as Vyasa Purnima as it is also celebrated to mark the birthday of Guru Veda Vyasa, regarded as the main Guru in the Hindu Dharma. He wrote the 4 vedas and 18 Puranas, Apart from this he is character in and author of the Mahabharata, the great epic of Hinduism.
  • Hindus traditionally hold that Vyasa categorised the ancient single Veda into three official collections, and that the fourth one, known as Atharvaveda. The split of Vedas happened on this day.  Hence he was called Veda Vyasa, or “Splitter of the Vedas,”. The splitting being achievement that allowed people to understand the divine knowledge of the Veda. Hence this day is celebrated as a gratitude to Guru Veda Vyasa for sharing this divine knowledge.
  • Adi Shankara, Sri Ramanuja Acharya and Sri Madhvacharya are some of the noteworthy Gurus in Hinduism, whose teachings will be remembered and worshiped on this day.
  • Guru Purnima is also celebrated by Buddhists in the honor of Gautama Buddha to commemorate the day when Buddha migrated with his five disciples from Bodhgaya and gave his first discourse at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India.
  • Jainism celebrates this festival as the day when Gautam Swami became the first disciple of Lord Mahavira.

Guru Purnima or VyasaPurnima is always celebrated on the full moon day in the Ashadha month. As per the Hindu calendar, Guru Purnima 2017 falls on Sunday, the 9th July 2017.

Yoga Asanas, Pranayama, Mantra Chanting and Meditation

Start your day early in the early morning (Brahmamuhurtha), take bath as soon as you wake up and start your day fresh. Practice all the teachings religiously on this this day. Which means carryout few rounds of Yoga Asanas, Pranayama, Guru Mantra Chanting and Meditation, mentally express gratitude and seeks your Guru’s blessings and guidance to reach out to your spiritual goals.

It means Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva), worship the Guru who is the manifestation of Parabrahma, the Supreme Lord

Guru Gayatri Mantra

OM GURUDEVAAYA VIDMAHE
PARABRAHMAAYA DHIIMAHI

TANNO GURUH PRACHODAYAAT
It means  – Om, Let me meditate on Guru deva, Oh, Parabrahma, the supreme lord, give me higher intellect, Let Guru illuminate my mind

Guru Purnima Vrat

  • As far as possible, ensure to eat pure Vegetarian food on this day, this will again help to keep you completely in positive mind throughout the day.

Mantra Chanting, Bhajan’s and Meditation

In many of the Ashram’s on this day they carry out Group Chanting, Sing Guru Bhajan’s and Group Meditations. Participate in this Group events as this will be very effective. The group chanting and meditation not only produces the healing effect on all the people in the group but also sends out positive vibrations in the environment which purifies the surrounding plants, animals and the environment. Sound waves generated by such mantras resonates the earth atmosphere and creates a divine link with the deity which serves as a channel to shower fortune, recognition, victory, wealth and power to the devotee.

Paada Puja and Offering’s

We cannot do Paada Puja to God who is in subtle form. So, devotees who desire to do Paada Puja, invite Spiritual Guru’s , Gnanis and Saints, to their houses and perform it. The Guru’s feet are to be considered in the physical sense, as the channels of DIVINE GRACE. From the ancient time, the spiritual truth seeker know’s that in order to get infused with spiritual wisdom, light and power, his receptive center, viz. the head, should come into contact with the preceptor’s transmitting center, which is Guru’s feet. Pada Puja creates and strengthens the aspirant’s faith and devotion and divine qualities like humility and humbleness.  Later the aspirant’s offer food, fruits, sweets and new clothes to the Guru’s and will get blessed.
